Sophia Academy STEM

Sophia Academy, an independent middle school for low income girls, introduced a new science curriculum, in partnership with East Bay Collaborative, which emphasizes experiential learning. With a new and stronger focus on STEM, both our math and science teachers were looking for ways to create greater interest among our girls in these areas. A partnership with the Women's Tech Collective was also started, and our girls now have after school tutors, a robotics coach for our newly formed team, and advisors for special projects. This summer, 20 students are attending a week long day camp with Save the Bay, created excusively for Sophia girls, to gauge the health of Narragansett Bay, among other "real world" projects, and they will be attending lectures given by women with expertise in various fields of science.
