GEMS-Girls in Engineering Math and Science-Centre College

Girls in Engineering Math and Science (GEMS) is a club started in the spring of 2014 at Centre College in conjunction with Boyle County Middle School. The club is composed of members from both Centre College and Boyle County Middle School.

GEMS meets weekly at Boyle County Middle School as an after school program for middle school girls. GEMS’s purpose is to expose middle school girls to science outside of the normal classroom, providing them with hands on experience that may not be available in the classroom and positive female role models. The all female members from Centre College serve as mentors for the female Boyle County Middle School students. Membership is open to any female interested. The open membership arises from the philosophy that any girl with interest in STEM should be encouraged to pursue it. Research has shown girls tend to lose interest in science at a much higher rate then boys during middle school. Our goal is to provide fun experiences with science and role models to these middle school girls, giving them the confidence to continue in science.
