Curiosity Academy

Curiosity Academy (CA) is a 28-week out of school club for students that will be in 6th-8th grade that aims to encourage girls to be comfortable with STEM. This community-based program meets for 2 hours most weeks October-June and is sponsored by multiple community partners including Longway Planetarium, the University of Michigan-Flint, Kettering University, and Mott Community College. We are in our third year and work really hard each year to develop a fresh program that has mentors, speakers, and curriculum that will have an impact, but it is the girls themselves that bring the biggest benefit to CA. Other kids can be really cruel to girls this age that show they want to understand things better. CA provides a place for these like-minded students to get together and be excited about STEM without worrying about what others think of them. We like to think of it as a Girl Scout-like club for the nerdy kids.

The program introduces young students to the reality of life as a female scientist by allowing them to meet women in a variety of scientific fields, showing them how scientists work together with other professionals, and assisting them through what scientific work entails by allowing them to experience and develop the grit of true lab work via both success and failure with the real tools of science in real science labs. They get the good, the bad, and everything in between. They also get to see a variety of college campuses, which helps to build their confidence about being at a college in general, in addition to being in the lab or shop.
