Chattanooga Girls Engaged in Math and Science

We are beginning our 2nd year at the new STEM High School in Chattanooga. We are a magnet school with 9th and 10th grader. We will enroll a new 9th grade every year. We are located at our local community college, which will make it easier for our students to be involved in the dual enrollment courses. Our students will also have an opportunity to take courses at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.  My goal is to engage more girls in a STEM program and introduce them to STEM careers that have a shortage of employeed women.  Our after-school program goals are as follows:

To introduce girls to a curriculum and career in STEM.

To involve the community in our projects and programs designed for girls in STEM.

Find nearby colleges/universities with a successful STEM program/curriculum.

Increase the number of girls in the STEM schools.

ACTIVITIES/TIMELINE:

Visiting nearby colleges and universities with a STEM program.

Meeting 2-3 times a month to discuss STEM (ideas, current events, questions, concerns), Shadowing businesses where women are leaders in STEM.

Visiting other STEM high schools and partnering with them on ideas and projects.

Partnering with area middle schools that may have girls who are interested in coming to STEM High.

Research and presentation on a STEM project of their choice at the end of the year.

Host a career day at STEM high inviting local businesses in STEM.

Summer camp designed for incoming freshmen in the STEM school.
