All the Rivers Run

"All the Rivers Run" is a multi-day residential program for 4th through 8th graders at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (CVEEC), run by the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Students enjoy a rare opportunity to live and learn in a national park—especially beneficial for kids from urban neighborhoods in the Cleveland and Akron areas.

The program offers interdisciplinary, place-based, and STEM-centered (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning in the Cuyahoga River watershed. Students explore the rivers, ponds, and woodlands of the national park to learn about sustainability, human impact on the environment, and the interconnectedness of the natural world.

Students who participate in "All the Rivers Run" leave with the following knowledge, skills, and experiences:

• Understanding of ecological concepts such as energy flow, life cycles, biodiversity, community interrelationships, and change.

• First-hand observation of the impact of human activity (e.g., land development, poor water quality, pollution) on the Cuyahoga River and surrounding watershed.

• Understanding of the concept of sustainability and how to reduce/improve the human impact on the local/global environment--not only in national parks, but in their own lives.

• Appreciation for natural settings, wildlife, and the value of green spaces/parks.

• Understanding of the concept of stewardship and how individuals protect parks for current and future generations.

• Experiencing the pleasure of outdoor activities, such as hiking and exploring of streams, ponds, and the Cuyahoga River.

• Exposure to potential careers in education, environmental science, nonprofit organizations, and the National Park Service.

A vital part of the Conservancy's mission is to provide scholarships to children from lower-income families so they can participate in CVEEC programs. Scholarships to lower-income students are funded by donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals, including Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds initiative.

The CVEEC is operated by the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the park's nonprofit friends group. For more information about CVEEC programs, visit
