Wisconsin GEMS (Girls; Engineering, Math and Science) Conference is a community outreach effort hosted by Continuing Education at UW-Waukesha to inspire math and science exploration in middle school girls. The GEMS annual spring event at UW-Waukesha offers interactive opportunities for girls; ages 11-14. The girls take part in four sessions, choosing from a variety of offerings ranging from such disciplines as forensic science, veterinary medicine, dentistry, biomedical engineering and food science. Each fun-filled workshop is led by successful women professionals from industry, as well as professors and college students; all who volunteer their time and creative talents to provide a day of learning and excitement. The primary objective of our girls-only day is to inspire and to boost confidence of middle school girls to pursue coursework that will lead them to consider science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as future careers. Concurrently, parents are invited to attend sessions planned especially for them to help understand the middle school developmental stage and to learn to help guide their daughters academically as they pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering and math. We strongly believe that together we can work to build a richer future for our youth, and begin developing a talented workforce for the continued vitality of our businesses and community. We are happy to report that this will be the fourth yearwe have hosted this conference. We hope you will partner with UW-Waukesha Continuing Education Department on the GEMS Conference.
